Minnesota State University Mankato (MSU) continues to lead the way in accessible, high-quality education with its growing portfolio of fully online graduate programs. In a recent conversation with Jonathan Paver, Director of Online Programs, and Michael Bilden, Director of Marketing & Recruitment for Online and Distance Programs and Interim Director of Transfer Partnerships, we explored the university’s commitment to providing flexible, industry-aligned programs that meet the evolving needs of adult learners. 

Expanding Opportunities for Adult Learners 

Recognizing a demand for more accessible graduate education, MSU Online has expanded its program offerings to reach students balancing careers, family, and personal responsibilities. 

“There are a lot of people in Minnesota who have some college experience but no degree or are looking to advance their careers,” said Paver. “Our online programs provide the flexibility and resources they need to achieve their academic goals without disrupting their lives.” 

Bilden emphasized that expanding online education is also essential for staying competitive in the higher education landscape. By leveraging the university’s existing academic strengths, MSU Online has built programs that serve both regional and national audiences. 

Introducing the Master of Public Health (MPH) 

One of MSU Online’s newest additions is the Master of Public Health (MPH), designed to meet the rising demand for public health professionals. This program offers specialized tracks in Health Behavior and Health Promotion, Nutrition, and Dietetics, providing graduates with the credentials needed to pursue impactful careers in the field. 

“The MPH was developed based on faculty insights and industry needs,” Paver explained. “We saw an opportunity to fill a gap and offer students a clear pathway to certification and career advancement.” 

Other Innovative Graduate Programs 

MSU Online also offers the MS in Aviation Safety and the MS in Advanced Professional Nursing, both addressing critical workforce needs. 

• Aviation Safety: One of the few programs of its kind in the country, this degree prepares aviation professionals for leadership roles in safety management and operations. 

• Advanced Professional Nursing: Designed for working nurses, this program offers tracks in Nurse Leadership and Nurse Education, helping to fill the growing demand for qualified nursing faculty and healthcare leaders. 

“We’re proud to offer unique, in-demand programs that give our students a competitive edge,” Bilden added. 

Supporting Student Success 

MSU Online is committed to delivering not only rigorous academic experiences but also comprehensive student support. Courses are designed with flexibility in mind, using asynchronous learning models to accommodate working professionals. Some programs also incorporate optional synchronous sessions for enhanced interaction.
