Exploring Choices Psychotherapy: Compassionate Care for Mental Health

At Choices Psychotherapy, the focus is on fostering an environment where clients feel supported, understood, and empowered to navigate their mental health journeys. The Choices team is dedicated to providing high-quality, personalized care through a multidisciplinary approach. In a recent conversation with Clinical Director Rachel Moran, MA, LMFT, we explored the organization’s history, commitment to mental health accessibility, and exciting plans for the future.

A Legacy of Care and Expansion

Choices Psychotherapy began with a mission to provide compassionate and effective mental health services. Over the years, the practice has grown significantly, now operating three clinics and partnering with a multidisciplinary team of providers. “We’ve seen how important it is to adapt and grow,” Rachel shared, reflecting on the evolution of the practice. Choices offers individual therapy, group sessions, and even advanced modalities like Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR) and Accelerated Resolution Therapy (ART).

Adapting Through the Pandemic

Like many mental health providers, Choices Psychotherapy faced significant challenges during the COVID-19 pandemic. Transitioning to telehealth was a key adjustment that allowed the practice to continue meeting clients’ needs. While this shift was not without its hurdles—including the loss of in-person connection—telehealth remains a vital component of Choices’ hybrid model of care.

“We would never get rid of telehealth,” Rachel emphasized. “It ensures accessibility for clients who might not be able to visit our clinics in person.” This adaptability underscores Choices’ commitment to breaking down barriers to mental health care.

Advocating for Accessibility and Affordability

Accessibility and affordability are central to Choices Psychotherapy’s mission. While insurance ratesChoices Founder are beyond their control, the team works diligently to keep care accessible. This includes maintaining telehealth options and staying informed about policy changes that could impact mental health services. For instance, Rachel mentioned their proactive approach to engaging with Minnesota lawmakers to protect and enhance support for small mental health practices.

What’s Next for Choices Psychotherapy?

Looking ahead, Choices is poised for growth. The addition of new providers, including a psychiatrist and a DBT-trained therapist, signals exciting opportunities to expand their services. “We’re always thinking about ways to grow based on client feedback and identified needs,” Rachel explained. Plans include enhancing group offerings and integrating hybrid models for therapies like Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT).

The Difference Between Therapists and Psychiatrists

A frequent question in mental health care is the distinction between therapists and psychiatrists. Rachel clarified: “Psychiatrists are medical doctors who prescribe medication, while therapists focus on psychotherapy. At Choices, we’re fortunate to have psychiatrists who integrate psychotherapy into their care, offering sessions that are often 30 to 60 minutes long.” This collaborative approach allows clients to receive holistic care under one roof.

Challenges and Rewards in Mental Health Care

Mental health care is a demanding field, and burnout among providers is a significant concern. “Therapists carry so much,” Rachel noted, describing the emotional toll of helping clients navigate their traumas. Yet the rewards are profound: “Seeing positive life changes in our clients, knowing you’ve made a difference, is incredibly fulfilling.”

For those considering therapy for the first time, Rachel’s advice is to “do some research, find a therapist you connect with, and give it time. Building trust and a therapeutic relationship is key, and it’s worth the effort.”

A Commitment to Community Impact

Beyond clinical care, Choices Psychotherapy is dedicated to community involvement. The practice recently sponsored a table at the Angel Foundation Gala, a nonprofit supporting families impacted by cancer. This initiative aligns with Rachel’s vision of extending Choices’ impact beyond therapy sessions. “We want to be a resource for our community, helping in ways that go beyond our daily work,” she shared.

A Bright Future for Mental Health Care

Rachel’s vision for Choices Psychotherapy is clear: to maintain its small-business ethos while continuing to innovate and adapt. “I hope we always provide a space where providers can thrive and clients feel truly cared for,” she said. In an era where mental health care is more important than ever, Choices Psychotherapy stands out as a beacon of hope, compassion, and excellence.
